GigNeighbour Background Check Policy

GigNeighbour is a local marketplace that connects task posters with independent service providers. This Background Check Policy explains GigNeighbour’s approach to background checks, the responsibilities of service providers and task posters, and the meaning of any background-check information displayed on the platform.
Background checks can provide useful information, but they do not guarantee a person’s identity, character, qualifications, reliability, suitability, or future conduct. Users should always exercise reasonable judgment when deciding whether to work with another person.
1. Background Checks Are Not Required for Every Service Provider
GigNeighbour does not require every service provider to complete a background check unless GigNeighbour specifically states otherwise for a particular service, feature, or category.
Service providers may be asked to indicate whether they have completed a background check and provide relevant information about it.
Certain tasks involving children, older adults, vulnerable persons, access to private homes, or other sensitive responsibilities may warrant additional screening.
Task posters remain responsible for determining whether a background check is appropriate for their particular task.
2. Service Provider Responsibility
Service providers must provide accurate and truthful information about their background-check status.
A service provider must not falsely claim that they:
have completed a background check;
have passed or been cleared by a background check;
hold a valid police information check or vulnerable sector check;
have been verified or approved by GigNeighbour; or
possess documentation that they do not actually possess.
Providing false or misleading background-check information may result in removal of information, restriction of platform features, suspension, or termination of the account.
3. Obtaining a Background Check
Where a background check is requested or appropriate, service providers may be responsible for obtaining the applicable check themselves through a legitimate police service, government-authorized provider, or other recognized screening organization.
The type of check required may depend on the nature of the task and applicable legal requirements.
Service providers are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining their own background checks unless GigNeighbour expressly states otherwise.
4. Vulnerable Sector and Sensitive Services
Some tasks involving children, older adults, persons with disabilities, or other vulnerable individuals may require or reasonably justify additional screening.
A standard criminal record or police information check may not be equivalent to a Vulnerable Sector Check.
Service providers must obtain any screening, licence, certification, registration, or other authorization required by law for the services they provide.
GigNeighbour does not represent that a particular background check makes a service provider suitable to work with vulnerable persons.
5. Background Check Information on Service Profiles
GigNeighbour may allow service providers to indicate their background-check status on their service profiles.
Depending on the platform's available features, information may include statuses such as:
Background Check Submitted
or another description adopted by GigNeighbour.
A displayed status does not mean that GigNeighbour guarantees or endorses the service provider.
GigNeighbour will clearly distinguish between information merely provided by a service provider and information that GigNeighbour has independently verified.
6. Verification by GigNeighbour
Unless GigNeighbour expressly identifies information as verified, users should not assume that GigNeighbour has independently authenticated a background check or confirmed its contents.
If GigNeighbour introduces a verification process, it may review documentation or use an independent screening provider before displaying a verification status.
Any verification represents only the information reasonably reviewed at the time of verification. It does not guarantee that the information remains current or that the individual will behave safely or appropriately in the future.
7. Expired or Outdated Background Checks
Background-check information can become outdated.
Service providers are responsible for accurately representing the date and current status of any background check they provide.
GigNeighbour may request updated documentation or remove a background-check status when information appears outdated, incomplete, inaccurate, or cannot reasonably be confirmed.
8. Task Poster Responsibility
Task posters are responsible for evaluating service providers before selecting them for a task.
Depending on the nature of the task, task posters may wish to:
review the service provider's profile and experience;
ask relevant questions about qualifications;
request appropriate licences or certifications;
confirm insurance where appropriate;
request or review an appropriate background check; and
take additional precautions for tasks involving vulnerable persons or access to private property.
A background check should be considered one piece of information and not a substitute for reasonable judgment.
9. No Guarantee of Safety or Suitability
A background check cannot identify every past incident or predict future behaviour.
GigNeighbour does not guarantee that a person who has completed or passed a background check is safe, trustworthy, qualified, reliable, or suitable for a particular task.
GigNeighbour also does not guarantee the completeness or accuracy of information provided by third-party screening organizations, police services, government agencies, service providers, or other external sources.
Users remain responsible for deciding whether to interact with or hire another user.
10. Privacy and Background Check Information
Background-check information may contain sensitive personal information.
Users should not publicly post complete police checks, identification numbers, dates of birth, government identification documents, or other sensitive information on task listings or publicly visible areas of GigNeighbour.
Where GigNeighbour receives background-check documentation, it will handle personal information in accordance with the GigNeighbour Privacy Policy and applicable privacy requirements.
GigNeighbour may limit the information displayed publicly to a status or other appropriate indication rather than displaying the underlying document.
11. False or Misleading Documentation
Submitting altered, fraudulent, misleading, or falsified background-check documentation is prohibited.
GigNeighbour may restrict, suspend, or terminate an account when it reasonably believes that false or fraudulent documentation has been provided.
Where appropriate or required by law, GigNeighbour may also cooperate with law enforcement or other relevant authorities.
12. GigNeighbour's Role
GigNeighbour operates a marketplace that helps task posters and independent service providers connect.
GigNeighbour is not an employer of service providers and does not supervise or control how independent service providers perform their tasks.
Background-check information is intended to provide users with additional information when evaluating potential connections. It is not an endorsement, certification, guarantee, or representation of a person's character or suitability.
13. Changes to This Policy
GigNeighbour may update this Background Check Policy as its services, verification features, screening processes, or legal requirements change.
When changes are made, GigNeighbour will update the Effective Date shown at the top of this Policy.
Significant changes may also be communicated through the website, email, or other reasonable means.
